The US track and field team is seeking to better their record 14-title haul set in Osaka two years when the World Athletics Championships start here on Saturday.

With US athletes entered in all disciplines, men's coach Harvey Glance was in bullish mood on Friday, predicting that the team would be challenging the medal haul achieved at the Osaka worlds in 2007.

"Our programme is excited about challenging the 2007 medal count," Glance said.

"Our goal for both the men and women's team is to have the finest world championships we've ever had. We have the talent on this team to make that happen.

"We're a pretty talented country and we consider the team the number one track and field team in the world and I hope that by the time we leave Berlin the talent we have will leave holding that title."

The US team dominated the overall standings at the Osaka worlds two years ago ahead of Kenya and Russia.

It equalled its best-ever haul, first achieved in 1991, with a total of 26 medals, 14 of them golds and four of those coming in an unprecedented sweep of all four relay races.

Jeremy Wariner, Allyson Felix, Kerron Clement, Michelle Perry, Reese Hoffa, Brad Walker and Bernard Lagat will all defend world titles from Osaka.

And with the likes of Stephanie Brown Trafton, Sanya Richards and LaShawn Merritt hitting the worlds in good form, the US team seems set to again dominate the medal table.
